Anchor new habits to old ones

The most reliable habit formula isn't a reminder or an app — it's stacking: 'After I [existing habit], I will [new two-minute habit].' After I pour my coffee, I will stretch for two minutes. After I brush my teeth, I will lay out tomorrow's clothes.

Existing habits are automatic; you're just piggybacking on wiring that already exists. Choose anchors that happen daily at a predictable time, and keep the new action genuinely small for the first two weeks.

One habit at a time is the other rule people skip. Stacking three new habits at once means none of them get automatic before your enthusiasm runs out — which it will, because that's normal, not weakness.

Make the streak visible, then protect it

A paper calendar with an X for each day you did the thing works better than most apps, because it's physically in your way. The goal is not a perfect streak; it's never missing twice in a row.

Missing once is an accident. Missing twice is the start of a new (worse) habit.
